Xiaomi Bootloaders: How to Unlock and Lock

Image
Not a long moment ago, Xiaomi decided to lock their bootloader. Anda berbicara bahasa Indonesia? Baca artikel terjemahannya di sini . During their early years, Xiaomi was a developer-friendly manufacturer. It was terribly easy to flash a new ROM. Just boot into fastboot and use MiFlash to flash a new ROM. Rooting wasn't difficult too, even though I rarely root my device. Recently, however, starting from the days of their 3rd generation Redmi phone (Redmi Note 3, Redmi 3), Xiaomi decided to lock their bootloader , making it one step more difficult to flash a new ROM. Xiaomi stated that the decision was to comply with Google's Android guideline. I personally think that it is probably to prevent sleazy importers from flashing unofficial ROMs to their devices. Unsurprisingly, this decision, of course, enraged most of the community. Some threatened to never buy Xiaomi devices again (good luck finding another great value-for-money brand), some just grumbled like usual. Howeve...

Finally, A Redesign!

Image
Like My New Look? Huzzah! Finally, Blogger has received three new themes. All of them have finally adopted the current design trend: flat and colorful. After I thought that Blogger was dead, I'm glad that I was wrong. Well, I thought so because its official app was last updated in February 2016. Even so, the interface is so outdated it looks like an app from the early days of Android. Well, anyway, even though there are new themes, I'm sad to say that I only like one of them, and it's Contempo, the one that you're looking at right now. At least now it looks more modern. Anyway, the theme is same: green. During the redesign process, I might make a few changes here and there, so please bear with me. Well, I guess that's all for now. There's a new article coming on the weekend. Stay tuned!

Flashing Evercoss Winner Tab V (AT8B)... and Possibly Other Spreadtrum Devices

Image
Evercoss Winner Tab V specs at a glance. Anda berbicara bahasa Indonesia? Baca artikel terjemahannya di sini ! Last year, for business purposes, my workplace decided to purchase Evercoss Winner Tab V, a very delicate entry-level Android tablet. The tablet currently serves as a template and benchmark device for our web apps. Even though the specs are... well, let's say they reflect its highly-affordable price... the tablet itself is pretty good. In fact, to our surprise, we just realized that it's been upgraded to Marshmallow. Yes, the Winner Tab V, which comes with Lollipop (Android 5.1) and costs less than $100 has received the major update to Marshmallow. Don't hold your breath for Nougat, though... However, the update process isn't as easy as OTA. You need to flash the firmware. Yes, you read that right--flash the firmware, which may include risks such as brick and bootloop. The instructional video listed on the device's support page wasn't helpful, e...

Steelseries Rival 500 Review: Buttons, Buttons, Buttons!

Image
Anda berbicara bahasa Indonesia? Baca artikel terjemahannya di sini ! This may not sound right, but I used to think that pro gaming peripherals are nothing more than glorified your-everyday-mice-and-keyboard. Actually, scratch that. I used to think that they are overpriced and doesn't really give an advantage over your usual peripherals, aside from prestige and cool appearance. However, I saw my friend use a gaming peripheral by Logitech and he seems to really like it. Just listening to his experience was enough to entice me to try one. Steelseries Rival 500 Official Shot Meet the Steelseries Rival 500, a professional gaming-grade mouse from Steelseries with best-in-class sensor and whopping 15 buttons. The first thing that I had in mind when learning about this mouse was "This thing has 15 buttons?" I thought it was overkill, but when I learned that each button can be programmed individually, I changed my mind to "maybe I could be more productive with this ...

LastPass - For Your Eyes Only: Using Password Managers for Your Account Safety

Image
Anda bisa berbahasa Indonesia? Baca artikel terjemahannya di sini ! Okay, let's face it. I've got several of my accounts hacked. What's worse is that some of the accounts were holding some of my money (e-money, since two of three hacked accounts feature "balance" for easier transaction). You can read the stories over at Technoverse (Indonesian language). I didn't write about the last hacking attempt, since I've finally become embarrassed of it and think "Okay, this has to stop. Three is so enough that it's not funny anymore". I used to have 2 different passwords for most of my account, probably that's why my accounts got hacked so easily. All of them have the same email or similar username. I've read somewhere that the most secure password is the password that even you cannot remember . Okay, that's my mistake... Use password managers. It's for your own safety. To help me redeem myself, I've finally decided to ...

Wellcomm Touch1 Review: Wireless Charging for Cheap

Image
Anda berbicara bahasa Indonesia? Baca artikel terjemahannya di sini ! Wireless technology is the future, whether you like it or not... or at least, things are getting smaller and use less cord. Look at Apple's retina MacBook for example, they only have 1 (yes, ONE) USB-C port, and instead of apologizing for being so stingy, they encourage their users to go wireless. The new MacBook Pros, another example, only have USB-C ports. To make up for it, they will sell you dongles at a discount. LG G3 Wireless Charger Okay, excuse my sarcasm, and let's get back to wireless technology. Wireless chargers have been around for quite a while, probably since LG G3 (which is 3 years ago, if I'm not mistaken). It has become cheaper and cheaper since, with the latest culmination of the technology is Samsung's Wireless Fast Charger, which is compatible with their latest flagships. Though I initially wasn't interested in the technology, I saw my friend buy one, and it seemed ...

2017: A Short New Year Greeting

Image
Well, I might turn this into a tradition :p Alright, guys... I'll be honest. When I said that more articles were coming, I certainly didn't mean another ceremonial post like this. I was writing an article about password managers when... I got sick. So yeah, I had no choice but to postpone the promised article but instead, I got this: HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017! Yeah, I promise that a new "real" article (not ceremonial ones like this) will come a few days after January 1. But for now, let me apologize and wish you guys all the best for 2017. 2016 was a year full of challenges and surprises (whether pleasant or not...) but hey, life goes on, right? Regardless of the challenges that we may face in the months ahead, we need to stand up and say "You're no better than me!" and punch those challenges right in the face. Well, okay... not literally, but you got the message, right? Ah, okay... Maybe I still am  not feeling well. Anyway, happy new year 2017 and...
